Walking up from the underpass the towering bi-level gleaming stainless-steel Superliner carriages of the Coast Starlight are impressive. Then an announcement – Boarding has commenced for the Coast Starlight bound for Santa Barbara, San Jose, the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Portland, Seattle and intermediate stations. Whilst the lounge is nothing special a friendly Amtrak agent checks my ticket and asks me to make lunch and dinner reservations for the onboard dining car. An Avis counter! Crisis averted!Īmtrak welcomes sleeping car passengers to its Metropolitan Lounge in Los Angeles. Could I get to Santa Barbara faster than the train? Luckily at the last minute I accidentally turned the wrong way down a one way ramp. As my departure time looms, I drive in circles, getting rapidly more nervous as the minutes pass.

My day dreaming is quickly interrupted by the realisation that the rental car return at Union Station is near impossible to find. Los Angeles Union Station seems to be the perfect backdrop to build anticipation for the journey to come. Whilst the elegance of a bygone era no longer exists and the Super Chief, complete with its A list celebrity manifest no longer graces the rails, it’s hard not to be excited setting off on one of the great rail journeys of the world. I smile as I think about the trade I’ve just made.

Public transportation information is also included in Google Earth.Sitting in a bar in Seattle with some ex-colleagues, a common theme emerges in our conversation – “why?”.
